Widow's Bay plot

Widow's Bay is a picturesque island town 40 miles off the coast of New England. But something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis is desperate to revitalize his fading community. There's no Wi-Fi, the cell reception is spotty, and he must contend with superstitious old residents who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don't. They see him as meek and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination.

Deze serie krijgt bijna overal schitterende kritieken, dus het zal wel aan mij liggen, maar ik had er absoluut niets mee! Ik vond de humor maar niets, alleen de horror in de serie was lachwekkend. Had hier enorm veel van verwacht, omdat de rol toch geknipt was voor Rhys, en hij deed het zeker niet slecht, maar dat was voor mij absoluut niet genoeg...

This series is receiving glowing reviews almost everywhere, so it must be me, but I really didn't connect with it at all!

I didn't care for the humor at all; only the horror in the series was laughable. I had huge expectations for this, since the role was perfect for Rhys, and he certainly didn't do a bad job, but that was absolutely not enough for me...

Kunstige mengeling van horror en humor, met invloeden van films als Jaws, The Fog en Halloween. De plotlijntjes zijn best leuk en er valt volop te griezelen, maar het zijn vooral de innemende personages die de kar trekken. Matthew Rhys en Stephen Root zijn uitstekend, maar de show wordt absoluut gestolen door Kate O'Flynn, hier heerlijk op dreef als de maffe assistente van de burgemeester. Na de eerste vier prima afleveringen zakt de boel sporadisch een beetje in, maar de kwaliteit blijft gehandhaafd. Uiteraard laat de spannende finale een deurtje open naar een seizoen twee.

An artful blend of horror and humor, with influences from films like Jaws, The Fog, and Halloween. The plotlines are quite fun and there is plenty to be scared of, but it is primarily the endearing characters that carry the show. Matthew Rhys and Stephen Root are excellent, but the show is absolutely stolen by Kate O'Flynn, who is delightfully on form here as the wacky assistant to the mayor. After the first four fine episodes, things occasionally sag a little, but the quality remains intact. Naturally, the suspenseful finale leaves the door open for a season two.

Vooral de eerste helft van deze serie is zeer vermakelijk. Zowel grappig als spannend en bij momenten eng. Een zeer moeilijke combo, zo leert de ervaring, maar hier slaagt men er zeer goed in het evenwicht te bewaren. Vanaf de zesde aflevering komt de sleur er wat in en lijkt de humor naar te achtergrond te zijn verdrongen. Niettemin een aanrader.

The first half of this series, in particular, is very entertaining. It is both funny and suspenseful, and at times scary. A very difficult combination, as experience shows, but here they succeed very well in maintaining the balance. From the sixth episode onwards, things start to get a bit monotonous and the humor seems to have been pushed into the background. Nevertheless, highly recommended.
