Rian Johnson has revealed the inspiration for the name of its sequel which is called Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Knives Out was released in 2019 and told the story of Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), a private detective investigating the death of a wealthy businessman.

It featured an impressive ensemble cast, as in addition to Craig we saw Ana de Armas, Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Toni Colette, Don Johnson, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell.

Knives Out received critical acclaim for its acting, directing and screenplay, with the screenplay being nominated for an Academy Award.

It was also a commercial success, earning $311 million on a budget of $40m.

In March of 2021, it was announced that Netflix had purchased the rights for two Knives Out sequels for $469m, with Johnson returning to direct and Craig returning as Benoit Blanc.

The sequel is called Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery - a title which naturally catalysed some discussion.

Johnson says he was given the inspiration by The Beatles song of the same name.

"I’m always fishing for something fun that Blanc can grab onto as an overwrought metaphor that he can beat to death," he told Netflix's Tudum.

“This is all in plain sight from the very start. So, the idea of glass came to me, something that’s clear. I’ll be very honest.

"I literally got out my iPhone and searched my music library with the word glass. 'There’s got to be some good glass songs.' I was like, 'Oh, is it a glass fortress? Is it a glass castle? Is it a glass man?'

"The first thing that came up, because I’m a huge Beatles fan, is ‘Glass Onion.’”

What is the plot of Knives Out 2?

Benoit Blanc is the only returning character from the original Knives Out, and Glass Onion will feature a completely new story with a new ensemble.

In addition to Craig, it stars  Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Jessica Henwick.

The official premise for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is:

"Tech billionaire Miles Bron invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island. When someone turns up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case."
