James Bond producers open up on difficulties casting 007

James Bond franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have opened up about the difficulties they face when having to cast a new actor to play 007.

Over the course of the 60-year franchise, six actors have officially played Bond - Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.

Craig was initially a controversial choice for the role due to his blonde hair and blue eyes which was a deviation from the dark-haired actors from the past. He would eventually win the hearts of fans through his performances, though, and went on to star in five movies - Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre and No Time to Die which proved to be his last.

Each actor who has played Bond has brought something different to the role, and any new star will need to do the same.

Broccoli and Wilson have explained that the process of appointing a new 007 is not easy as it can be a decade-long commitment for any of the candidates, while actors who can bring something fresh to the character are desired.

“The thing is, it’s going to be a couple of years off,” Broccolli told Variety about when we can expect a casting announcement.

“And when we cast Bond, it’s a 10, 12-year commitment. So he is probably thinking, ‘Do I really want that thing?'

“That’s why, when people go, ‘Oh, who are you going to get?’ it’s not just about casting an actor for a film. It’s about a reinvention, and ‘Where are we taking it? What do we want to do with the character?'

"And then, once we figure that out, who’s the right person for that particular reinvention?

“With , when we had the conversation at this very table about, you know, going to do it, he said, ‘Well, I’m going to do it. I really want to be a part of it, the whole thing.’ And he lived to regret that,” said Broccoli, tongue in cheek.

“But it’s a big commitment. It’s not just showing up for a couple of months of filming.”

Who will be the next James Bond?

For almost a decade, Idris Elba has been considered to be the front runner to replace Craig as the next James Bond. However, it now seems like the casting won't materialise, while Elba himself is getting sick of being asked about it.

“I have no more answers for it," he said on the Jemelle Hill is Unbothered podcast.

"I just tell people, ‘Aw, don’t ask me that.’ Because a lot of times it’s really lazy journalism. And people try to use it as clickbait like ‘what’s he gonna say this time?’ I try to say the same things.

“Every now and then, I’ll give them some philosophy on why I don’t want to do it or why it’s a rumour. But most times now, I tend not to talk about it.”

The current favourite for the role is Henry Cavill, while other names in the mix are Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, James Norton, Rege-Jean Page, Kit Harrington and Riz Ahmed.
