La Vie de Marianne plot

The beautiful Marianne (Virginie Ledoyen) was raised as an orphan by a priest and his sister. When they die, she is alone in the world. One day she meets the gallant Valville (Melvil Poupaud). But urged on by an uncle of the latter, she rejects the young man and seeks peace in a monastery. Mrs. de Miran (Sylvie Milhaud) pays the expenses that Marianne incurs without being asked; she is Valville's mother and has a better 'match' in mind for her son. Yet she has to resign herself to her son's relationship with the orphaned girl. But when the news circulates in fashionable circles that Marianne is the child of unknown parents, everything is again done to keep her away from Valville.
