Beijing: Chang'an Jie Yan Xian plot
Chang'an Boulevard is 45 kilometers long. Artist Ai Weiwei has recorded the entire route. At 608 points along the way, he ran the camera for one minute, resulting in a 10-hour, 13-minute film. The infrastructure of Beijing, the capital of China for over 600 years, has a clear architectural structure: the city is split in two from east to west by Chang'an Boulevard. Together with the city center, Tiananmen Square, this boulevard became the cultural and political heart of China after 1949. The film shows the transformation of the urban landscape. The work shows Beijing as an organic whole and captures the rhythm of the city, the social structure, the cityscapes, the socialist planned economy, capitalism and the political center of power, as parts of a layered city collage.
