Mavis Staples (born July 10, 1939) is a legendary soul and gospel singer. She began singing in local churches with her father (Roebuck Staples), a sister (Cleotha), and her brother (Pervis). The group began writing protest songs and was nicknamed "God's Greatest Hitmakers." The Staple Singers became the most spectacular and influential gospel group for the freedom movement of the 1960s.

For decades, Mavis Staples was the lead singer of The Staples Singers, who mixed gospel with soul and R&B and was an important inspiration for American cultural icons such as Bob Dylan and Martin Luther King. Biographer Greg Kot puts them on par with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in terms of influence and this documentary makes a convincing case for that statement. Musical greats such as Bonnie Raitt, Chuck D and Marty Stuart talk about the meaning of the music of The Staples Singers and their music is timeless. At the age of 75, Mavis is still touring, always in the company of her sister (and backing singer) Yvonne and although she is on stage with a walking stick, she still manages to generate that raw energy with which she makes a splash. The charismatic Mavis is an open book in conversations about her life, but as a result her story is told fairly quickly and Edwards struggles to maintain interest for 80 minutes in the second half.
